Plenty of one-day bathroom companies install acrylic surrounds and shower liners. It is a legitimate product, it is cheaper for us to buy, and it installs faster. We could carry a better margin on it. We do not install it, and it is worth explaining why in specific terms rather than dismissing a whole material category.
What each material is
Acrylic used in shower surrounds is a thermoformed sheet, typically a thin acrylic layer over an ABS or fiberglass backer, heated and vacuum-formed over a mold. It arrives as a shaped shell.
SPC is stone plastic composite: limestone powder combined with PVC and stabilizers, extruded into a rigid board, then finished with a printed decorative layer under a clear wear coat. It arrives as a flat, rigid panel that is cut to fit.
The critical structural difference is that an acrylic surround is a formed shell that relies on the wall behind it for support, while an SPC panel is a rigid board that is dimensionally stable on its own.
The four reasons we do not use acrylic
1. Flex, and what follows from it
Acrylic surrounds are thin, often an eighth of an inch or less in the wall sections. Where they are not perfectly bedded, and in practice they frequently are not, they flex under hand pressure.
That flex is the root of the material's reputation. Every shower cycles it, thermally and mechanically, and thin polymers fatigue under cyclic loading. Cracks initiate at corners and around fixture penetrations, which is exactly where we see failed acrylic units. SPC does not deflect meaningfully under hand pressure, so the cycling that fatigues acrylic simply is not occurring.
2. Yellowing
Acrylic and gelcoat surfaces degrade under ultraviolet exposure and react with the oxidizing chemicals in common bathroom cleaners. The result is a progressive shift from white toward cream and then yellow, and it cannot be cleaned off because it is a change in the material rather than a deposit on it.
SPC panels carry a UV-stable clear wear coat specifically formulated against this. That coat is the reason the finish still looks the same in year twelve.
3. A thin surface layer over a different material
The glossy face of an acrylic unit is a thin layer over a structural backer. Abrasive cleaners and scouring pads wear through it, and once breached, the substrate underneath is microscopically porous, holds stains, and cannot be polished back because the polished layer is gone. This is why an aging acrylic surround looks permanently dull and why scrubbing it harder accelerates the decline.
4. Molded shapes fit the mold, not your bathroom
An acrylic surround is manufactured to a standard size. Bathrooms are not standard, particularly in older Palm Beach County properties where walls are rarely square. A shell that does not quite fit gets shimmed, packed, or filled at the edges, and every one of those compromises is a void behind the surface or a caulk-dependent gap at the perimeter.
SPC panels are cut to the measurements taken at the estimate, so they fit the room that exists rather than the room the mold assumed.
What acrylic is genuinely better at
To be fair to the material: it is cheaper, it is lighter to handle, and a single-piece molded pan has fewer joints than a panel pan assembly. For a very tight budget on a rental that will be sold within a couple of years, acrylic is a defensible choice and we would not argue hard against it.
The problem is that acrylic is frequently sold as a premium product at a premium price, which is a different matter entirely.
The specific claim to be skeptical of
Be careful with the term liner. Some one-day companies install an acrylic liner directly over an existing tub or surround, bonded with adhesive and sealed at the perimeter.
The concern is straightforward: if any water gets past that perimeter seal, it is now trapped between the liner and the original surface, where nothing dries and nobody can see it. That is a mold incubator with a warranty attached. We would rather assess the substrate honestly, repair it if it needs repair, and install a rigid non-porous surface over something sound.
The summary
Acrylic fails by flexing, cracking, yellowing, and wearing through a thin surface layer. SPC is rigid rather than flexible, homogeneous rather than layered over a void, UV-protected rather than UV-degrading, and cut to your bathroom rather than molded to a standard. We install the one we would put in our own homes, and we are telling you what the cheaper option costs you so you can weigh it yourself.
