This comparison gets written a lot, usually by someone selling one of the two. So let us be direct about the bias: we install SPC panels, and we think they are the better answer for most South Florida showers. We will also tell you exactly where tile is the right call, because sending someone down the wrong path costs us more in the long run than turning down a job.
What each material actually is
Traditional tile is a rigid surface of ceramic, porcelain, or natural stone units set in thinset mortar over a substrate, with grout filling the joints between them. Its waterproofing depends entirely on the layer behind it, not on the tile itself.
SPC is stone plastic composite: limestone powder combined with PVC and stabilizers, extruded into rigid panels, then finished with a printed decorative layer and a clear protective wear coat. The panels interlock with tongue-and-groove edges and are sealed at corners and terminations with matching trims. The panel body is non-porous throughout, so waterproofing is a property of the material rather than of a hidden membrane.
Time on site
A standard tub-to-shower tile job runs one to two weeks. Demolition, substrate repair, waterproofing with its cure time, setting tile, letting thinset cure, grouting, then sealing, each stage waiting on the last. Your only bathroom is out of service for the duration.
The same conversion in panels is a single day, typically four to eight hours on site. The reason is not that we work faster. It is that a panel install has no cure-and-wait stages in the middle of it and, in most bathrooms, no demolition of the existing tile at all.
Waterproofing and failure mode
This is the difference that matters most over ten years. Tile has a joint every few inches, and that joint is porous cement. Panels have no grout at all.
Consider how each one fails. Tile fails gradually and invisibly: grout absorbs, the membrane behind it is breached at a weak point, and moisture moves into the wall for years before anything shows. Panels fail visibly and locally: if a trim seal is ever compromised, water shows up at that specific joint where you can see it and address it. A failure you can see is a vastly better failure than one you cannot.
Maintenance over ten years
- Tile: resealing grout every twelve to eighteen months, periodic deep cleaning with acidic or chlorinated products, and eventual regrouting or spot tile replacement.
- SPC: mild soap, water, and a soft cloth. No resealing, ever. No grout brush.
Cost, honestly
Panel material can cost more per square foot than budget ceramic tile. The installed cost usually lands lower, because labor is one day rather than five to ten, and there is no demolition, no dumpster, and no substrate rebuild in most cases. Compared against mid-range porcelain or any natural stone, panels are typically well below the tiled equivalent once the whole job is counted.
Where tile genuinely wins
We will say plainly that tile is the better choice in a few situations. If you want a true mosaic feature, a specific handmade artisan tile, or a highly irregular custom geometry, tile does things panels cannot. If you are restoring a period property where the tile is part of its character, panels would be wrong. And if a wall is already structurally compromised behind the surface, that has to be rebuilt regardless of what goes on top.
The short version
Tile is a beautiful material with a maintenance obligation and a hidden failure mode. SPC panels trade a small amount of design exotica for a surface that is waterproof by nature, installs in one day, and asks nothing of you afterwards. In a humid coastal climate, with a homeowner who wants their bathroom back tonight, that trade is not close.
